Wade Green is a dancer who became profoundly deaf as a small child. With the help of a cochlear implant, he is able to hear the music to which he dances. He has just turned sixteen years old.
Wade has studied Ballet, Modern Dance and Jazz for nine years through the City Dance Program, which is sponsored by the City of Richmond. Last year he was accepted for the Alvin Ailey Intensive Summer Program, and, through community donations, was able to attend their Junior Division. Previously Wade also studied at the School of the Richmond Ballet's summer intensive program
Wade has appeared with the City Dance Theatre Company, Charisma Dance Company, and, as an actor, with the Jazz Actor's Theater of Richmond. As a member of the City Dance Theatre's competition team he has helped win over one hundred national trophies at the DanceAmerica competitions. He has performed in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Fort Worth, Texas at the National Dance Association's national conferences. Wade performed solos in each of these presentations. Locally Wade has performed with City Dance Theatre at the Landmark Theater, the Grace Street Theatre, Dogwood Dell, and at numerous private and public events, as well as performing with the Richmond Symphony and the Richmond Boys Choir.
At the City Dance Program's annual concert on June 20, 2008, Wade danced the role of Prince Charming in the full-length children's ballet of Cinderella. This role includes the demanding highlight of the ballet, the Grande Pas de Deux with Cinderella at the ball. Wade is a very talented and gifted dancer. He has an astounding stage presence and an elegant line. In a powerful piece choreographed by Willie Hinton, he performed with strong emotion and a maturity beyond his years.
Wade's ambition is to be the first deaf dancer to perform with a major modern dance company.
He is an advocate for the Deaf and performs community work by signing for various events in the Richmond area.
